What do worms, winter and wetlands
have in common?
They are just a few of many
nonfiction subjects
tackled by
artist and writer Consie Powell.
|
 |
"I love to muck around in nature's lovely untidy places,"
Consie says, "and I try to convey my fascination with
the natural world through my art and writing."
Exposure to nature has always been a way of life for Consie
Powell. During her childhood in California, Consie snooped
through ocean tidepools, found desert tortoises and horned
lizards in dry canyons, and went camping with her family.
Animals and the outdoors were her constant companions.
|
During college in Minnesota she got permanently hooked on
winter and the critters and habitats of the North. After graduating
with a bachelor's degree in fine arts, Consie pursued a master's
degree in elementary education. Graduate work steered her
not toward teaching, as she had expected, but into the creation
of art and stories for young people.
Consie has written and illustrated A Bold Carnivore: An
Alphabet of Predators , Old Dog Cora and the Christmas Tree,
and Amazing Apples, and has illustrated Who
Lives in the Snow? by Jennifer Berry Jones. Her two newest
books are Leave Only Ripples:A Canoe Country Sketchbook
and The First Day of Winter.

Consie illustrates, designs, edits and occasionally writes
the "North Carolina WILD Notebook," a monthly young
readers' feature in Wildlife in North Carolina magazine. She
has created illustrations for the North Carolina Museum of
Natural Sciences and for many scientific publications.
Visitors to the North Carolina Zoo can see Consie's "Field
Sketching" triptych near the streamside exhibit. She
created the display during her tenure as the zoo's first Visiting
Artist.
|
| Consie lives with her biologist husband
in Raleigh, where she draws and writes in a bright cluttery
studio that she shares with their big Newfoundland dogs. Over
the years, their house has been home to dogs, cats, snakes,
toads, lizards, mice, guinea pigs, weasels and an animal-loving
daughter, now grown and on her own. |

When Consie is not in her home studio in North Carolina,
you might find her paddling a canoe in Minnesota or hiking
back roads in Wisconsin. She gets outside with sketchbook,
hand-lens and binoculars whenever she possibly can.
